Eight identical 564 mm shelves is the batch-cutting dream: one fence setting, eight parts. It's also where kerf errors compound - eight shelves cut "close enough" produce eight slightly different fits on the shelf pins. Tools you'll need
- Track saw or table saw with a fine-tooth blade - melamine chips on exit, so a 60+ tooth blade (or a scoring pass) matters here more than on plywood
- Drill driver, plus a shelf-pin jig (32 mm system) - with 8 adjustable shelves you'll drill a lot of pin holes, the jig pays for itself in this one build
- Pocket-hole jig with coarse-thread screws for the carcass joints
- Edge-banding iron and trimmer for the exposed front edges - pre-glued melamine banding matches the sheet faces
- Stud finder and level for the ledger strip
- Hacksaw for cutting the closet rods to length
Time estimate
Half a day to cut all 18 parts and edge-band the front edges. Half a day to drill pin holes and assemble both towers. Two hours to mount the ledger, hang the towers, and fit the rods. One weekend, and there's no finishing day at all - melamine arrives finished.
Build sequence
1. Cut the tall tower sides first (2000×400 mm), both at one setup. Score the cut line or use a fine blade - chips on the visible faces can't be sanded out of melamine.
2. Cut the short tower sides, tops, and bottoms. The tops and bottoms are identical 564 mm parts - batch them.
3. Cut all eight shelves at one fence setting. Identical shelves are what make the adjustable system work.
4. Cut the two back panels. The tall back (2000×564 mm) uses the bulk of a sheet on its own.
5. Edge-band all front edges before assembly. Iron on, trim flush. Skip the edges that face the wall.
6. Drill shelf-pin holes with the jig, 32 mm on center, on the inside face of every tower side. Mark the jig position from the bottom edge on every panel so the rows match across panels - mismatched rows mean rocking shelves.
7. Assemble each tower - pocket screws and glue, top and bottom between the sides, back panel screwed on to square the box.
8. Screw a ledger strip level across the closet wall, through drywall into every stud it crosses. Both towers hang on this one strip, so its levelness decides whether the whole system reads straight.
9. Hang the towers on the ledger and screw through the backs. The floor takes the weight; the ledger keeps everything against the wall and lets you shim towers plumb on carpet.
10. Fit the closet rods - the main rod spans between the towers for long-hang clothes, plus a high rod above the short tower for shirts, both cut to measured length.
Planning the layout
The default splits a 2400 mm closet into three zones: the 600 mm tall tower against one side wall, a roughly 1200 mm rod span between the towers for long-hang clothes (dresses, coats), and the 600 mm short tower against the other wall - folded clothes on its shelves, a short-hang rod in the space above it. Before cutting, measure your actual closet width and subtract your towers from it - what remains is rod space. If your closet is 1800 mm, drop the short tower; if it's 3000 mm, add a third tower by bumping quantities in the optimizer.
Material options
- Melamine (18 mm) - the default and the industry standard for closet systems: pre-finished both faces, wipes clean, no painting. Use a fine blade. See the melamine cut calculator.
- Paint-grade plywood - choose it when the closet has no doors and the organizer should match the room trim. Adds a full finishing day.
- MDF - cheap and paints beautifully, but 564 mm shelves in 18 mm MDF sag under folded-jeans loads within a year. If you use it, keep shelf spans under 500 mm. The MDF calculator handles the numbers.
Common mistakes
Screwing towers to drywall instead of studs. A loaded tower weighs well over 50 kg. The ledger strip exists to convert "two studs happen to line up" into "every stud in the wall carries load".
Mismatched shelf-pin rows. Drill every panel with the jig referenced off the bottom edge. Eyeballed rows produce shelves that rock on three pins.
Cutting melamine with a framing blade. The exit side chips into white confetti. Fine-tooth blade, tape over the cut line, or score the line first.
Forgetting the baseboard. Towers sit against the wall - either notch the back bottom corners around the baseboard or (easier) pull the baseboard inside the closet. Measure before you cut the backs.

The default is sized for a 2400 mm-wide reach-in. For narrower closets, drop the short tower; for wider, add a tower or widen the rod spans. Tower depth is 400 mm, which clears a standard 600 mm-deep closet with the door closed and hangers on the rod.
Melamine or plywood for a closet organizer?
Melamine, unless the organizer is visible from the room. It's pre-finished, wipes clean, and is what commercial closet systems use. Plywood earns its extra cost and finishing day only when it needs to match room trim.
How high should the closet rods be?
Long-hang rod at 1650-1750 mm from the floor, short-hang (double-hang) rods at about 1000 and 2000 mm. The tall tower is 2000 mm for exactly this reason - its top doubles as the upper rod's reference height.
