Tools you'll need
- Circular saw with a straight-edge guide - a track saw or table saw is nicer but nothing here needs one
- Drill driver, countersink bit, and a box of 2.5" deck screws
- Wood glue - the glue carries the load, the screws are clamps
- Level and a stud finder for the wall anchoring step
- Two sawhorses - you'll be breaking down full sheets on the garage floor otherwise
Time estimate
Half a day to break down three sheets and cut all 13 parts, two hours to assemble, half an hour to anchor to the wall. One garage Saturday start to finish. No finishing needed - it's a garage.
Build sequence
1. Cut both side panels first, at the same saw setup so they match. They're the reference for every shelf position.
2. Rip the four shelves. Same 450 mm rip as the sides - keep the fence where it is and run all six rips in one session.
3. Cut the back panel. At 1800×1200 mm it takes most of a sheet on its own; the cross braces and front lips come out of what's left.
4. Mark shelf positions on both side panels at once. Clamp them back-to-back and mark across both edges so the shelves can't end up sloped.
5. Glue and screw the shelves between the sides. Work on the floor, bottom shelf first, and check square before each shelf locks the geometry in.
6. Attach the back panel. It squares the whole case and carries the racking loads - this shelf design is not optional-back.
7. Add the cross braces and front lips. The lips stiffen each shelf edge and stop tubs sliding off.
8. Stand it up and anchor the top of the back panel to wall studs. A loaded unit holding a few hundred kg must not be able to tip forward. Two lag screws into studs, through the back panel.
How much weight can it hold?
Each 1164 mm shelf in 18 mm plywood with a glued front lip carries roughly 90 kg (200 lbs) of distributed load before visible sag - storage-tub duty, not engine blocks. The stiffness comes from the lip acting as an edge beam. If you plan to store heavier items, either shorten the unit width or double the shelf thickness on the bottom two tiers; both edits are one field in the optimizer.
Material options
- Plywood (18 mm) - the default. Strong, holds screws well, flat.
- OSB - drops the budget by about 30% and holds the same loads in this design. Rougher surface and edges; wear gloves. Use the OSB cut calculator.
- MDF - don't. It sags under sustained load and swells with garage humidity. If you must, halve the expected shelf load.
- Melamine - works and wipes clean, but the smooth face is slippery under tubs and the edges chip in garage duty. Better for closets - see the melamine cut calculator.
Common mistakes
Skipping the wall anchor. A 1800 mm-tall unit loaded with tubs is a tip-over hazard, full stop. Two lag screws into studs cost five minutes.
Building it deeper than 450 mm. Deeper shelves feel like more storage but the back half becomes an archaeology dig, and deeper shelves sag sooner. Two shallow units beat one deep one.
Screws without glue. Screws alone work loose as the plywood cycles through garage humidity swings. Glue every joint; the screws just hold it while the glue cures.
Ignoring the floor slope. Garage floors slope toward the door by code. Shim the base level before anchoring, or every shelf inherits the slope.

How many sheets of plywood do I need?

Can I make the unit wider than 1200 mm?
Not without a mid-support - 18 mm plywood shelves start to sag past about 1200 mm spans under storage loads. For a wider wall, build two units side by side; the cut list scales by changing quantities in the optimizer.
Can I use 2x4s and plywood instead?
That's a different (also valid) design - a lumber frame with plywood shelves. This template is all-sheet-goods on purpose: fewer tools, fewer part types, and the optimizer packs everything into 3 flat sheets you can haul in a hatchback.
How high should the shelf spacing be?
The default spacing fits 30-gallon tubs on every tier. If your tubs are taller, shift the shelf positions when you assemble - the sides aren't pre-drilled, so spacing is yours to choose. Keep the heaviest tier at the bottom.
