A classic 4×4 ft raised bed, 460mm deep — the depth most root vegetables need to thrive. Side walls are 1220mm long; corner posts double as ground stakes that you can drive into the soil for a level start. Use cedar if you can afford it (rot-resistant, no sealer needed) or a sealed exterior-grade plywood for budget builds.

Don't use pressure-treated lumber for vegetable beds — the chemicals leach into soil. Pre-drill every screw hole; cedar splits if you don't. Line the inside with landscape fabric (not plastic) before filling with soil to slow rot from the inside without trapping water. Plan on replacing the bed in 8–12 years even with cedar.
