How to calculate plywood cuts

A standard plywood sheet is 4x8 feet (2440x1220mm). When cutting multiple parts from a single sheet, the order and orientation of cuts directly affects how many sheets you need and how much you waste.

Our cut calculator uses a 2D bin packing algorithm to find the optimal layout. Enter your stock sheet size and required parts - the tool calculates the best arrangement, accounting for saw blade kerf width.

Common plywood sheet sizes

Tips for reducing plywood waste

Nest similar sizes. Parts with similar dimensions pack more efficiently. Group your cut list by size before optimizing.

Allow rotation. A piece that's 800x400mm can be placed as 400x800mm. Our optimizer tries both orientations automatically.

Account for kerf. A standard table saw blade removes ~3.2mm (1/8") per cut. This adds up across dozens of cuts.

Use the right sheet size. Sometimes a 5x5 sheet is more efficient than 4x8 for square parts.
